Habitat: This grosbeak species can be found in forest borders, second-growth woodland and clearings with scattered trees. Distribution: This species is migratory. It breeds in eastern and central North America and will migrate south from Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela. Natural History Notes: This species is usually found in groups, foraging seeds and berries in high trees. It can also catch insects in flight. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a latitudinal migratory species. Characteristics: The total length of this species is 7.25 inches cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This species has a large white bill. The male will have a different plumage during the breeding season. The breeding plumage unmistakable. It consists of a head, upperparts and throat all black colored but with a characteristic red patch on the breast. Then, the rump, the underparts are white. We can also distinguish white patches on the wings. The female looks similar to the nonbreeding male and its plumage consists of a brown coloration above with white superciliary and a coronal stripe and brown cheeks. The part below is white and the female does not show any pink coloration.
