Habitat: This Antbird species will favor undergrowth of humid forest habitats in the lowlands and lower foothill.s Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Honduras to northwestern Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The beautiful Ocellated Antbird is a fervent army ant follower like most of Antbird species. Its tail is rarely motionless and you will often see this bird lowering the tail slowly to then lower it rapidly in a sharp sound. Its song consists of a series of high rapid whistles sounding like "peee-peee-pee-pee-pee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-eer-eer". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 7.5 inches and 7.75 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This beautiful bird has a long black tail, a red-brown iris and pinkish legs. It is characterized by the large area of pale blue bare skin present around the eyes. The plumage is olive brown on the above with large black spots that are bordered beige-orange and give a scaled appearance. We can distinguish a beige-gray cap, becoming orange on the back of the head. Then, the ear-coverts, the throat and the chest are black. The underparts are chestnut colored with large black spots that also give scaled appearance.
