Habitat: The Scaled pigeon will favor forest borders, second-growth woodland and shrubby clearings habitats in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: This pigeon species is usually found singly or in pairs, usually perched on high tree branches. They usually feed on forest fruits and seeds. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 30 cm and 33 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This interesting bird has a bright red bill with the tip a little more pale. The plumage is mostly chestnut brown and we can see that the neck, the upper part of the back, the throat and the breast feathers have white spots with black edges. Those spots give a "scaled" apperance, which explains its common name "Scaled pigeon". The underparts are mostly beige and the tail is dark brown.
