Habitat: This species will be encountered in mangroves and adjacent forest. Distribution: This species has been reported from Southern Florida throughout West Indies to St. Lucia; islands off Yucatan, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Caribbean western and east-central Panama. In Panama, this species has been reported only from Bocas del Toro coast and San Blas Islands. Natural History Notes: The White-crowned pigeon is usually found alone and sometimes in groups. The White-crowned Pigeon needs two distinct habitats, one for nesting and one for feeding. This species is threatened mostly by hunting pressure and loss of its suitable habitats (mangroves). Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Near Threatened (NT). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 13 inches and 14 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This unmistakable pigeon species has a bill with a red base and a pale beige tip. The plumage is mostly dark gray but contrasts greatly with the white crown that include the eyes contour.
