Habitat: This Solitaire species can be commonly observed in montane forests and forest borders in the highlands of western Panama. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica and western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Black-faced Solitaire usually forages alone in low vegetation for berries, but also insects. You may see it ascending into the canopy or emerge into trees, searching for food. Its call consists of a nasal "ghank" or liquid "quirt". The song of this bird consists of a beautiful whistle like "teedleedlee…tleedleeee…lee-dah…lee-dah" and you will have more chances to hear in the evening. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 18 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a large yellow bill with orange legs. The plumage is mostly pale gray, which contrasts with the deep black forehead, facial area and chin. Then, the wingsare black, except for a white band present at the base of the flight feathers. The tail is black with the outer feathers gray.
