Habitat: This Gnatwren species will favor undergrowth of humid forest habitats in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from Nicaragua to southern Peru. Natural History Notes: The Tawny-faced Gnatwren will be usually found in pairs or in small groups and foraging close to the ground. Their tail is rarely motionless and will often flip it around. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 10.1 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a long orange bill and a short tail. The plumage is dark brown above with the sides of the head and the neck of a bright tawny orange coloration. Then, the throat is white, but we can see that it is bordered by a large black stripe. Also, some black stripes present on the chest give the shape of a partial collar on the bird. The underparts are gray.
