Habitat: This bird is fairly common and can be found in undergrowth of forest and second-growth woodland. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The White-whiskered puffbird is often found in pairs, perched on a branch. This bird is overlooked. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 8 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This little bird represents well the family of puffbird because of its plumage that confers it a very puffy look. The bill is dark gray above and yellowish-green below. The iris is red. The plumage on the part above of the body is rufous brown with little black spots on the back and the wings. We can also distinguish a white preocular area and a white undulation on the chest and throat. The lower underparts are pale beige with stripes of gray. The female is similar to the male, but has a grayer plumage above and less stripes on the part below.
