Bocas Species Database Habitat: This antpitta species can be found in dense undergrowth at forest borders and adjacent clearings and in second-growth foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Honduras to western Colombia. Natural History Notes: This bird is fairly hard to observe and the best way to see it is to discern its call from the other antpitta species. Its call is a series of 6 to 8 whistles notes rapid and ending bruptly like "oh-oh-ou-ou-ou-uu-uu-uu". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 6 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a brown-gray crown. The back and the wings are more olive colored and the wings edges are tipped rufous. This bird can be characterized by a white throat, beige underparts with gray strikes on the breast and the sides of the body, and rufous flanks and lower belly. The race reported form Bocas del Toro has a brighter coloration on the part below. |
