Habitat: Frigatebirds are usually found on islands, along the coast. Distribution: This species breeds on small islands in tropical Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. Natural History Notes: The Magnificent Frigatebird is a sea bird that will be often seen swooping over the surface to capture flying fish and squid. In Panama, this bird has been observed to feed on dead fish or other floating marine creatures. This bird usually breeds in colonies on islands and the nest is placed in bushes and trees. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 96 cm and 1 meter (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This very large bird has very fine, long, pointed wings bent back at the shoulder and that can reach a length of 19 cm when spreaded. The tail also has a deep forked shape and the bill is black and yellow with a hook shape. The male has the plumage entirely black with a beautiful and unmistakable bright red throat pouch that will be inflated like a ballon during breeding season. The female has a plumage almost entirely black but it lacks the red throat pouch and the sides of the neck and the breast are white. Also, the upper wing-coverts show a brown band.
