Habitat: This species prefers mudflat and wet grassy habitats. Distribution: This sandpiper breeds in arctic and migrate during winter to South America. Natural History Notes: This species is migratory and only a small number reaches Panama during winter migration. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 17.78 cm and 19.05 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). Both the beak and legs are black. The plumage varies whether the bird is breeding or not. The nonbreeding plumage consists of a brown-gray coloration on the above and the below part mostly white. We can distinguish gray patches and lines that crossing the chest and extending toward the flanks. When the bird is breeding, the plumage looks more whitish and we can see brown strikes crossing the flanks and the breast.
