Habitat: This species can be found along the Caribbean coast mostly inland but also along large rivers and in mangroves. Distribution: In Panama, this species has been reported only along and near the Caribbean coast. Natural History Notes: You may see this bird of prey perched on a branch at different heights, but they might be observed at lower heights when they prey on small crabs. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 20 inches and 21 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This hawk species has very broad wings and a fairly short tail. The plumage is mostly black, which contrasts with the cere (bill), lores and legs that are yellow. When this bird is flying, you might be able to distinguish a white patch a tthe base of the primaries. Also, the tail shows one large band and a fine white tip.
