Adult: Species description based on Lynch and Myers (1983). A medium-sized frog (males to 36 mm, females to 46 mm). Dorsal: The dorsal coloration ranges from greyish brown to more orangeish or reddish. Patterning is variable. Some individuals have a dark bar between the eyes, as well as wide or narrow bars or boomerange-shaped markings, lightly outlined or not, down the back. See Lynch and Myers (1983) for excellent photographs of pattern variation in this species. The sides of the snout are dark; this dark coloration continues as a thin line through the eye to the tympanum. Ventral: The ventral surface is cream or white, except for the throat which is grey. Concealed surfaces: The groin has no distinct markings, but the rear surfaces of the thighs are orangish or reddish brown (in Panama) with some light flecks or spots. Eye: The upper half of the iris is golden, but the lower half varies in color with locality. The lower half may be golden as well, or greyish or more red or pink. The iris has fine black reticulations, and there is a dark line through the center.
