Adult: Species description based on Lynch and Myers (1983). A medium-sized frog. Males to 39.2 mm, females to 59.6 mm. Dorsal: Dorsal coloration ranges from light to dark brown, with a darker hourglass pattern usually present on the back. Additionaly darker markings may also be present. The dorsal surface is mostly smooth, sometimes with a few warts or ridging along the shoulder blades. Lynch and Myers (1983) provide photographs of dorsal pattern variation in this species. Alternating light and dark barring is present along the lip line. Ventral: Ventral coloration varies from white to greyish to greenis. Brown mottling or blotches are usually present on the throat, but there is rarely a median white line. Concealed surfaces: The rear surfaces of the thighs are uniform brown with some reddish or orangeish coloration, but without any lighter spots or blotches or marbling. The undersides of the thighs in Panama usually have an orange tint. Eye: The iris ranges from golden to bronzy, with the lower half turning darker (blackish, brownish or reddish) in larger specimens. A red-brown line separates the upper and lower halves of the iris. Extremities: The feet are moderately webbed.
