Adult: Species description based on Savage (2002) and Hanken et al (2005). Large salamander. Adult size ranges from 122-260 mm, including the tail. Females grow slightly larger than males. Dorsal: Dorsal surface black with some brownish markings. Ventral: Ventral surface grey peppered with black. Ventral and lateral surface of tail sometimes with spots. Distinguishing characteristics: This species is almost all black, but has a distinct ring around the base of the tail that ranges in color from cream to pink to orangey-red. Eye: Iris dark brown black. Extremities: Hands and feet moderately webbed.
Habitat: Premontane and lower montane rainforest between 500 and 2000 m. Ecology: Bolitoglossa robusta is ground-dwelling, mostly found in leaf litter although sometimes climbing on plants, and nocturnal (Hanken et al 2005, Rafaelli 2007). This species has been found under fallen logs during the day (Savage 2002). Type locality: Faldas of Volcano Irazu (Costa Rica)
