Habitat: Marine. Abundant on reef tops and in shallow rocky areas, also found in Sargassum beds. Natural History Notes: Mobile Invertebrate feeder. Solitary and wary. Depth: 2 - 24m Characteristics: Three color phases. Adults : large males develop a roundish dark blotch near mid-side, above the anal fin origin. Three red line markings across top of head and two U-shaped lines on snout. Intermediates : two dark spots on foredorsal fin, merge to form an elongated oval. Juveniles : thin yellow-gold stripe from snout, above eye to tail with a wider black stripe below. White body below this black stripe.
